Infrastructure Values
Last night a few ogWiFi folks
gathered at
a lovely cafe in Hull with fine sandwiches, good tunes, Russian vodka, micro franco beers, une petite terrasse & world cup soccer viewing - formidable! Max (the owner) is very enthusiastic about providing wifi in his shop and will even have a computer available for those without laptops. We should have his cafe wifi enabled for testing purposes in the coming weeks.
I am really excited about this small initiative & was pleased about the receptivity to discussion topics regarding the infusion of community values, norms and ethics in infrastructure development, social responsibility related to developing sites of public engagement, ELF, and infrastructure in relation to city - urban & rural environments. Some discussion themes were:
- ogWiFi’s infrastructure reflecting Ottawa’s multiculturalism, linguistic diversity, and the transience of its citizens - few are native to Ottawa!
- interactivity and enabling people to share their stories & post their events
- location specific community content
- target neighbourhoods - Buckingham, urban centres on both sides of the river, neighbourhoods between Bronson and Parkdale, the Wellington strip, etc.
- nuances between advertising and community information
- Montreal’s ISF &Toronto’s WirelessToronto infrastructures reflecting their creators and how city cultures are reflected in them & what they are building. We mused about what OG’s will look like!
- Organizational structures
- Participation of NCF
- Server space
- The choice of technologies & the communities around their development
- and a bunch of other things!
The evening ended early as Alex is on Saturday morning childcare duty - YES! The fine man lets his wife sleep in & he & and his son make her french toast as she dreams! Sisterhood clauses 8.2.1 - a sister must in all instances ensure that a sister’s husband can in all cases fulfill these duties, i luv working with guys like him!
Later that evening i participated (perhaps led!) some superb late night urban exploration & trespassing, soooo much fun!
