Satellites for Human Rights Again!

July 7, 2006

This is so great!  No one considered this 10 years ago in a significant way when I was studying remote sensing.  When I did a paper on it, the boyz (only 4 other girls in the class!) just rolled their eyes.  My favorite comment was "do you really think this is realistic, you are just dreaming!".  I noted that 50 years earlier satellite image use in a classroom was also just a dream! Oh well! That is what you get when you don’t just wanna just do GI science!

The following article:

Monitoring human rights? Get a satellite. Above the most off-limits nations, satellites give a bird’s-eye view of suspected human rights violations; June 22, 2006 edition of the Christian Science Monitor by Peter N. Spotts.

is excellent! It discusses the recent use of remotely sensed images over Zimbabwe by Amnesty International (see two earlier posts 1 & 2) but also possible applications for hard to get to places such as Burma, Chad and Darfur or to demonstrate the uneven distribution of health care resources in India, or possibly other contested areas & issues.

Also of great interest, are the resources being provided by foundations to purchase commercially available images. The American Association for the Advancement of Science,”Triple A-S” (AAAS) supported Amnesty International for the acquisition of the Zimbabwe before and after images and the AAAS received support from the MacArthur Foundation to do so.

Any Canadian $s anywhere I wonder?
