I am going to be in a play!
I went and auditioned all quietly last Sunday - you know, no one wants to tell too many people in case of rejection! So I went, dressed casually with a bit of mascara! You know! Can’t be tooo plain. Arrived suitably early but not to early. I was directed to pick any of the skits on the table. So read the titles, and one peaked my curiosity. Hair! Something i have been thinking about, talking about, ranting about, wanting to write about. Into the audition room i went, read the skit, which is exactly about some of the issues i have been talking about. It was really fun. I found out afterwards that it’s the first skit of the play. I went home, and then forgot about the whole thing!

Well, i will do the first skit of the Vagina Monologues written by Eve Ensler in Ottawa, V-Day on March 3rd! This year the funds will go towards supporting women in the Congo where they are subjected to rape as a war tactic. Last year they raised 20k!
Whoo hoo! Hope ya all will come and see the play!

congrats on the part but did it have to be vagina monologues?? can’t they raise money with some other play?

There are multiple ways to raise money for multiple causes. V-day fundraising activities happen every year, and each year they choose a cause and this is this year’s cause. I think it is a worthy issue to support and to hightlight in a high profile event. The V-monologues are about a number of really important issues for and by regular women, and that is what makes it so interesting. It has raised lots of awareness on numerous women’s issues and has empowered and awakened many women to think about or address the taken for granted, often subliminal cumulative little socially constructed sexisms in their day to day lives. By labeling them or giving them a story causes change. And the book, of course helps women appreciate their bodies, in all theyir sizes, colours and consenting uses!
Have you seen the play?
And who are you?

I’m going to be in the Vagina Monologue too!!! laughing.
I love it! I just absolutely love it!
When I arrived, I was also directed to chose a skit from the table. I was drawn to two very different roles, but in the end I opted to read for “The Flood” because I thought it was hilarious and I knew I would be able to portray the character as depicted by the writer.
I didn’t get that particular role; however, I was very fortunate to be chosen to play another part. The directors were very friendly and yet professional. They made everyone feel at ease.
I’ve been in many plays in my career as a “wannabe” actress, but I chose to audition for the Vagina Monologues for many reasons. First an foremost I wanted to be a part of this year’s fund-raising target: Women in the Congo. I find myself very fortunate to live as a free woman and I just wanted to do my part to try to help my not so fortunate sisters in the Congo.
Secondly, I think it’s time we address some very serious women issues and no I’m not a “bra burning, anti-men crusader”. However, I do have daughters and granddaughters and I will encourage them and all of my friends, men and women, to see the play and I do sincerely hope that they will be left with a new sense of Self, unconditional love and acceptance of the multitude variety of people it takes to make a balanced Universe.
