The visualization of casualties

June 21, 2007

Omar sent me this BBC link from Holland!

Iraq violence, in figures

What is going to bring us to our sense???????

The In Depth vignette explores casualties in Iraq, UK, US and Civilian as well as the sectarian issues illustrate above.  They have done a great job representing the uncertainties in the data, sharing their sources and finding ways to communicate the issue in a tangible way.

  1. I remember us marching against the US invasion of Iraq, now four+ years ago. Very sickening that this many Iraqui people have died in this US quest against the supposed ‘axis of evil’. The death toll in Iraq amounts to 1/7th of the population of Ottawa with no end in sight, no exit plan, no official proclamation that enough is enough - kind of like the Canadian govt. participation in Afganistan (how many Canadian soldiers, and others, have to die?) Foreign invaders in Afganistan will never win … hasn’t history provided this lesson, no matter how ‘just’ the cause (which does not apply here in any case).

Such a tragic and non-sensical waste of lives.
