Interesting Animation - Ascent of Man

February 28, 2008

Hmm! I like how the history of technology is represented, not sure what the ending means, and can’t quite figure out how he went from ape to white, and do wonder if there is such a thing of ascent of humans, or dare i say womyn will ever apprear, but alas, all those questions aside it is an intersting clip.

CCPA Alternative Federal Budget (AFB)

February 26, 2008

Today the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released the 2008 Alternative Federal Budget (AFB).

The AFB is coordinated by the CCPA and is the result of collaborative deliberations by representatives of a wide spectrum of civil society organizations. Among the innovations in this year’s AFB:

  • a gender budget analysis;
  • a poverty reduction plan;
  • a national infrastructure plan;
  • a sectoral development strategy to address the manufacturing crisis; and
  •  a greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan.

All Alternative Budget materials are available on the CCPA web site in both English and French: http://www.policyalternatives.ca

The CCPA is one of my favorite national research organizations.  Their work is well researched, independant and provides another perspective beyond the mainstream hype on national issues.  It is as important as the work that come out of the Pembina Institute or the Suzuki Foundation, except it’s focus is social and political, something we sorely miss in Canada.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is an independent, non-partisan research institute concerned with issues of social and economic justice. Founded in 1980, the CCPA is one of Canada’s leading progressive voices in public policy debates.

By combining solid research with extensive outreach, we work to enrich democratic dialogue and ensure Canadians know there are workable solutions to the issues we face. The CCPA offers analysis and policy ideas to the media, general public, social justice and labour organizations, academia and government.

Is it more environmentally friendly to read the paper on line or on dead wood?

Great article here that compares the environmental cost of news in print and news online.  It is not as obvious as we might all think!

Open Source and the University

February 22, 2008

I just spent a wonderful day with the founder of the Talent First Network among many other really fascinating people at Carleton today!  Here is a bit about their mandate!  Do scroll down their page to see the types of university supported open source projects they have ongoing and how students are featured.  They also have some grants and contests to either create new projects or to spark innovation.

The objectives of the Talent First Network are to:

  • Transfer knowledge, open source technology, and talent developed at Ontario’s academic institutions to Ontario companies and open source communities
  • Produce talented graduates with skills in the commercialization of open source technology (i.e., code, hardware designs, content, scientific knowledge, and product development processes)
  • Spin out companies that rely on open source technology to compete
  • Evolve the codified knowledge base that helps Ontario companies that rely on open source technology to compete and helps Ontario achieve influential leadership in open source software communities globally
  • Increase the number of faculty members in Ontario academic institutions who can produce talented graduates with skills in commercialization of open source technology and competition in open environments
