Dr. Pinch is a professor and former chair of the Science and Technology Studies department at Cornell University and a former professor of sociology at the University of York. His research interests include the sociology of scientific knowledge; fringe sciences; applications of social science; theories of technology and technological testing; interactional sociology and the history of musical instruments. Dr. Pinch has been an influential contributor to the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and together with Wiebe Bijker is responsible for founding the movement known as the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT).

He is also widely recognized for his contributions to the field of Sound Studies, particularly with his research on Robert Moog and the historical evolution of the synthesizer. Dr. Pinch’s current research continues to focus on music, science and technology. His most recent books include Dr. Golem: How to Think About Medicine (2005, with H. Collins), How Users Matter: The Co-Construction of Users and Technologies (2003, edited with N. Oudshoorn) and Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer (2002, with F. Trocco). Other significant publications include the Handbook of Science and Technology Studies (1994, edited on behalf of the Society for Social Studies of Science with S. Jasanoff, G. Markle and J. Petersen) and The Social Construction of Technological Systems: New Directions in the Sociology and History of Technology (1989, with W. Bijker and T. Hughes).
